PhD position summary/title: Researcher for indoor location tracking using (unmodulated) Visible Light

Indoor positioning and tracking systems have gained huge interest because of the many context-aware applications that have emerged lately. These applications are situated in domains such as healthcare, industry & warehousing, agriculture, … The innovations taking place in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT) enable us with new opportunities for indoor positioning. A promising wireless positioning technology is Visible Light Positioning (VLP), whereby LED light signals are being demultiplexed at the receiver, and further processed to deliver an accurate cm-level location estimate.

PhD position summary/title:

The VIB-UGent Center for Plant Systems Biology (PSB) is a world-leading plant science institute, harboring more than 280 people that focus their activities toward cutting edge research. The cornerstone of PSB is curiosity-driven research on basic cellular mechanisms.

An ongoing research topic in the Root Development group (Tom Beeckman’s lab) focuses on nitrogen, a major nutrient for plant growth, whose presence is however heavily affected by the microbial nitrogen cycle in soil, including undesired nitrification. This process is not only negative for plant growth, but also results in huge environmental pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. We are investigating original approaches to (biologically) inhibit nitrification and are looking for a PhD student with a strong background in microbiology to join our team.

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Top researcher for 6G propagation and channel modelling

6th generation wireless networks will use new mm-wave and sub-terahertz spectrum bands to realize the bandwidth needed for ubiquitous connectivity. The exploration of this new radio spectrum is needed to enable beyond 5G high-capacity applications. In the 140 GHz D-band (110 to 170 GHz) sufficient bandwidth is available to realize 6G applications such as wireless backhaul and fixed wireless access, close proximity data kiosks, and augmented and virtual reality. Device-free D-band passive indoor localization (radar) plays also a critical role in emerging assisted-living applications in the elder care, as well as in smart home, entertainment, industrial, and security applications. The expectation is that the changes in the 6G networks will also change the electromagnetic exposure of the general public.

PhD position summary/title:

The research group of Prof. Tom Taghon (www.taghonlab.ugent.be), located in Ghent, Belgium, is looking for a talented and highly motivated PhD student to join our team. Research in our lab is focused on the functional characterization of the molecular mechanisms that control T cell development in human (Roels et al., Nature Immunology 2020; Lavaert et al., Immunity 2020; Van de Walle et al., Nature Communications 2016). Using human primary hematopoietic stem cells and thymocytes, successful candidates will apply state-of-the-art molecular and cell culture approaches to further identify and characterize the precursor cells that are responsible for the generation of T cells in human (Lavaert et al., Immunity 2020) and design protocols to generate and expand these cells for clinical applications. Techniques include single cell RNAseq, CITEseq (Park et al., Science 2020; Lavaert et al., Immunity 2020) and ATACseq (Roels et al., Nature Immunology 2020), high-end flow cytometry and cell sorting, in vitro cell cultures and organoids for hematopoietic stem cell differentiation (Dolens and Taghon, Nature Methods 2017) and in vivo xenograft mouse models

PhD position summary/title:

We are looking for a talented and highly motivated PhD candidate to join our enthusiastic and young team on single cell neuroblastoma research. Specifically, you will implement and optimize computational approaches to unravel the regulatory heterogeneity in neuroblastoma and identify key regulatory factors and biological pathways at play in the disease pathobiology at the patient, disease stage and cell state level. Gene regulatory networks will be used as a framework and will be inferred based on single cell transcriptome and epigenome data of primary and metastasis tumor tissue at diagnosis and relapse.

PhD position summary/title:

SEA2LAND (started in January 2021) aims to develop solutions to help to overcome the loss of nutrients from fisheries waste and produce bio-based fertilisers through near-to-market technologies (advanced compost, biodrying, frozen concentration, algae production, pyrolysis, membrane technology, chitin extraction, frozen extraction, thermo-mechanical fractionation, enzymatic hydrolysis). The project builds on 7 cases in 6 different pilot areas from representative maritime areas North Sea, Baltic Sea, Atlantic Sea, Cantabrian Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Adriatic Sea). In the context of the project, Ghent University will assess the quality and safety aspects of the final bio-based fertiliser products and determine their agronomic/environmental behavior (e.g., nitrogen release dynamics in the soil, greenhouse gas emissions, microplastics presence and prevalence, effects on soil biodiversity and functionality). The produced bio-based fertilisers will be tested against the performance of conventional mineral fertilisers, in laboratory and/or field trial settings.

(13) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title:

We are recruiting a PhD student to work on the ERC-funded DIME project “Disruptive innovation in healthcare requires disruptive innovation in medical ethics”. You will be working with the PI, 1 post-doctoral researcher and another PhD student.
The project studies how several recent medical innovations do not conform with the way medicine traditionally operates. These innovations, oftentimes based on AI and big data, rather blur the boundaries of medicine and/or side-line the traditional doctor-patient relationship. Examples of this are health apps, direct-to-consumer genetic testing, disease surveillance, electronic patient records, telehealth and certain types of clinical decision support systems. The project postulates that several of these innovations may change the concept of medicine and thus turn out to be disruptive innovations.

About Ghent University, Belgium  –Official Website

Ghent University is a public research university located in Ghent, Belgium. It was established in 1817 by King William I of the Netherlands. After the Belgian revolution of 1830, the newly formed Belgian state began to administer the university. In 1930, the university became the first Dutch-speaking university in Belgium, whereas French had previously been the standard academic language in what was Université de Gand. In 1991, it was granted major autonomy and changed its name accordingly from State University of Ghent (Dutch: Rijksuniversiteit Gent, abbreviated as RUG) to its current designation.

In contrast to the Catholic University of Leuven or the Free University of Brussels, UGent considers itself a pluralist university in a special sense, i.e. not connected to any particular religion or political ideology. Its motto Inter Utrumque (‘In Between Both Extremes’), on the coat of arms, suggests the acquisition of wisdom and science comes only in an atmosphere of peace, when the institution is fully supported by the monarchy and fatherland.

Ghent University is one of the biggest Flemish universities, consisting of 44,000 students and 9,000 staff members. The University also supports the University Library and the University Hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals in Belgium. It is one of the greatest beneficiaries of funding from the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO). Ghent University consistently rates among the top 100 universities in the world.
