PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Physics, focus on experimental studies of dynamics in molecules
The doctoral student will be working on an experimental research project with the aim of understanding how molecules respond to photoexcitation to specific quantum states. The aim is to use advanced imaging methods to follow the evolution of the molecular geometry at its natural time scale. The scientific goal of the project is a deeper understanding of how a transition to a potential in a molecule which initiates dynamics affects the geometry of a molecule, leading to new isomers, fragmentation or to bond extension. The primary technique used is multiparticle momentum imaging, or the reaction microscope; experiments will be carried out at synchrotron sources such as MAX IV in Lund, or SOLEIL in Paris, or using pulsed laser sources.

The PhD student’s research will be focused on the development, analysis and implementation of new subspace correction methods for non-smooth and non-additive optimisation problems. These methods should be constructed in a way that they are converging to a solution of the original global problem and that the rate of convergence is independent from the mesh size of discretization. Concrete applications, where such methods are relevant, can be found in image reconstruction, as image denoising, inpainting, deblurring, and medical image processing.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Polymer Technology with a focus on synthesis and characterization of membranes for flow batteries
Clean and sustainable energy provided by renewable sources requires efficient, reliable and cost‐effective energy storage systems in the future. Because of the flexibility in system design and the advantages in scaling cost, redox flow batteries are promising for stationary storage of energy from intermittent sources such as solar and wind. The current doctoral project is focused on organic synthesis and studies of new ion-conducting polymers and electrolyte membranes to improve the performance and lifetime of redox flow batteries. The main goal is to develop new synthesis strategies and new knowledge about how electrolyte membranes for flow batteries should be molecularly tailored to combine efficient ion conduction with both mechanical and chemical stability.

The overall aim of the project is to investigate long term effects of severe sepsis through registry based epidemiological studies and to study how socio-economic factors impact the risk of sepsis. This current sub-project within ScanOats will focus on oat lipids and enzymatic conversion of these. The lipids will be analyzed using gas chromatography, HPLC and mass spectrometry. The emulsifying properties of the polar oat lipids will be investigated and the possibilities of producing oat-based lipid products with saturating properties will be studied. Furthermore, oat enzymes and their effects on the oat lipids will be studied.

Ancient DNA (aDNA) has changed history studies, enabling us to analyze early genetic variation directly. In recent years, there has been a sharp increase in the amount of collected aDNA and high-profile investigations. Still, insufficient information about the timing and geographical origin has limited the usefulness of the collected data and resulted in many erroneous reports. The project aims to develop machine learning tools to date aDNA and predict the geographical origin of the DNA material. The methods will be used to reconstruct the origin of domestic horses and their contribution to the success of Scandinavian Vikings.

It traces its roots back to 1425, when a Franciscan studium generale was founded in Lund.
