PhD position summary/title: PhD student in modelling gates on a superconducting quantum computer
This project is part of the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT), a 12-year, billion-SEK initiative started in 2018 with the purpose of advancing Swedish academia and industry to the forefront of quantum technology, and to build a Swedish quantum computer. Our team is also a prominent partner in the internationally competitive OpenSuperQ collaborative project working to build a quantum computer within the EU Flagship on Quantum Technology.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Development of AI/ML algorithms for shipping energy efficiency measures
This PhD position is funded by VINNOVA through the project “AI enhanced EEMs to reduce shipping emissions”. This PhD position and project will contribute to new knowledge and machine learning/AI algorithms development for various complexity of ship performancem models and their exploitation of ship energy efficiency measures, i.e., the AI-enhanced ship operation EEMs. These EEMs will also been disseminated to other shipping companies (to be tested on their ships) within the project consortium. This PhD position will work closely with other PhD students and PostDocs in the research group, as well as requires close cooperation with shipping companies, classification societies and the global maritime community. Therefore, good collabroative and communicative skills will be essential. We also expect that you have an interest to further develop your competence in regards to project management and the various forms of communication needed (orally and in writing, in meetings, at conferences, between project participants and to stakeholders).

PhD position summary/title: Two PhD positions in Life Cycle Assessment and Circular Economy
The first PhD project aims to structure, harmonize, and combine LCA and CE for the application of new buildings. The methodological approach is based on a structured literature review which is complemented by analysis of real building case studies. The application of common CE strategies to these case studies and assessment through LCA will allow reliable quantification of the environmental benefits and provide guidance for practitioners.
The second PhD project aims to improve resource efficiency of plastic circularity in construction that is currently hampered by five divides that illustrate fragmentation and a lack of holistic perspective in the value chain; information, materials, actors, analytics, and market/services. Through a co-creative research design that engages key actors in the value chain, methods to assess gains of improve resource-efficiency of solutions are developed and prototypes are proposed for optimizing the life cycle-wide management of plastic in the construction industry.

PhD position summary/title: PhD students needed in the development of next generation high-temperature processes for material production
As the successful candidate you will work in a project to explore possible process configuration paths that can contribute to transform greenhouse gas emitting industrial processes in Sweden from using fossil fuels to become net negative CO2 emitters by 2045 and beyond. The studied processes require high temperatures and fossil fuels are currently used in combustion-based processes. Potential paths for reducing the greenhouse gas emissions examined in this project includes direct electrification, using thermal plasma systems, and indirect electrification, using hydrogen from water electrolysis.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in water quality monitoring
Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies while contributing to the research and teaching environment at ACE. You will perform experiments and analyses in the laboratory, collate, manage and interpret data, and document results in publications. Research may involve field sampling. Instruments for fractionating, quantifying and characterising NOM will be used, with a focus on spectroscopy (absorbance and fluorescence). You will be working with data-intensive measurements for which skills in data analysis/data mining and programming will be beneficial to have from the outset, or otherwise must be developed during your PhD. You will need to communicate effectively with academic and industrial collaborators and coordinate your research activities to meet our common goals.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Solid and Structural Mechanics
A fixed railway crossing allows for trains to pass over two intersecting tracks, but each wheel transfer between the different rails results in a wheel-rail impact load leading to damage of wheels and rails, noise and vibration, and settlement of ballast. Based on advanced simulation methods and models, the aim of the PhD project is to optimize the crossing panel design to improve long-term performance, while reducing Life Cycle Cost and environmental impact (in terms of reduced amounts of steel and concrete). The models will be calibrated versus field measurements and monitoring data from instrumented crossing panels. Production aspects will be considered in the design optimization. You will be working in close cooperation with the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) and other actors in the railway sector.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Andreev spin quantum bits: When spins go superconducting
As a PhD student, the focus of your work will be nanofabrication and microwave domain experiments on low-dimensional hybrid nanodevices, to build devices for quantum information processing with Andreev bound states. You will work with state-of-the-art cryogenic and microwave equipment to measure and improve the quantum lifetime of the Andreev spin embedded in a superconducting quantum circuit. During the project, you will develop your scientific understanding, experimental skills and means to communicate your own results, both verbally and in writing. You will also interact and exchange ideas with external academic collaborators and will present your results in international conferences. The working language of the group is English.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Computer Architecture
For more than five decades, the speed at which computers get things done has been able to increase exponentially over time thanks to the fact that it has been possible to increase the number of transistors on a computer chip at the same pace. At this point, it is becoming challenging to fit more transistors on each chip, and at the same time the computing tasks are becoming increasingly data intensive, with everything from self-driving vehicles to analysis of massive data sets. This questions conventional wisdom how computers are built and calls for new solutions. In today’s technology, data is sent back and forth between the memory and computer chips, which costs both latency and processing power (energy). The topic of position will be related to our research activities which investigate high performance and energy-efficient solutions and focused on memory systems.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Pickering emulsions for food technologies
The research project at the Biophysical Technology Laboratory at Chalmers aims at the development of microfluidic technology, in particular EDGE microfluidics, for the preparation of pickering emulsions, and includes design and fabrication of devices by replica molding, 3D printing and glass etching, the functionalization of surfaces, and the design of transport principles and instruments for fluid flow control in the chip devices. Measurement of properties, characterization of the structures by means of optical and electronics techniques, and development of new fabrication technologies are part of the project. The laboratory offers a challenging, interdisciplinary research/education position in an international environment. PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)
This project will examine the accessibility of current and future interactive technologies for PwD and develop a comprehensive view of best practice for the development of collaborative tabletop technologies. Exploring the accessibility landscape of collaborative tabletop technology is an important piece of foundational research. The project will also examine the accessibility of related future research directions, building replicas and simulations of significant collaborative technology innovations through a combination of prototyping, robotic trolleys, workspace integration of tabletop and tablet devices, to guide development of multi-display surfaces that can augment user capabilities. The project will evaluate the complex accessibility issues that emerge and put together a comprehensive set of guidelines for accessible collaborative technologies usage.

The Geometry Assurance & Robust Design Group, at the Department of Industrial and Materials Sciences (IMS) and Wingquist Laboratory, conducts research on assembly modelling and analysis, robust locating system design, variation simulation, visualization, tolerance optimization, inspection preparation and use of inspection data for product and process control. The research group has over the last decade produced a number of scientific results that have been transferred into commercial software products, today used in daily operation by a large number of engineers at several international companies.
