PhD position summary/title: PhD Position Investigating Utterance Comprehension in Multimodal Context at the Donders Centre for Cognition.

The PhD project will aim to develop a model of how we understand language in face-to-face communication. A fundamental question of human behaviour is how social agents communicate meaning and comprehend others. This core aspect of behaviour allows us to influence and coordinate with others in meaningful and highly complex ways, and often quite rapidly. Most often this is achieved using language. Language provides a great deal of structure and flexibility for communication, but also leads to a high level of complexity.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate at the Donders Centre for Cognition: Ultrasound stimulation of the striatum in decision-making.

We make predictably bad decisions. We eat that extra slice of cake, buy that expensive phone, and fail to save our planet. We aim to understand how our motivations sway our actions, in often seemingly irrational ways. At the centre of this conundrum lies a deep brain structure known as the striatum. It is proposed to drive reinforcement learning, invigorate or inhibit action, and bias choice, by shaping cortical processes. These theories are backed by decades of animal studies, yet have remained untested in humans. We lacked the proper interventional tools until now.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate at the Donders Centre for Cognition: Biologically Plausible Learning and its Implications.

We invite you to apply for a PhD position on ‘Biologically plausible learning and its implications’. This project is embedded within the AI department at Radboud University. The aims are two-fold: the development of learning rules and the analysis of network outcomes given these learning rules. Specifically, you can help us to develop and investigate reward-based learning in spiking neural network models. We are particularly interested in methods by which spatial and temporal credit assignment can be achieved through local-only information. Such a locality of information for credit assignment is both an ingredient for biologically plausible learning and for implementation within neuromorphic systems. Following the investigation and development of learning rules, you as a PhD candidate will help us to determine how biologically plausible learning affects the computational process.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate for Characterisation of Atomic-scale Charge and Magnetic Order in Novel 2D Materials

As a PhD candidate, you will investigate atomic-scale magnetic order in different quantum phases of novel 2D materials. Since the discovery of graphene, a non-magnetic, semi-metallic 2D material, the search has been going on for 2D semiconducting and magnetic materials. Recently, 2D ferromagnetism was reported within a single layer of semiconducting or insulating materials, for example in transition metal halides (1,2). However, the atomic-scale magnetic order and the role of electron correlations in these materials classes are barely understood.
