PhD position summary/title: Department of Public Health and Primary Care.

The project of this ESR is part of Work Package (WP) 3 and aims to develop, implement and evaluate a school-based intervention to promote healthy behaviour in adolescents using a co-creation approach. This approach requires maximal participation of the adolescents and other stakeholders, and suggests there is shared-decision making between all co-creators. Two ESRs will closely work together to bring this project to a good end: this ESR specifically focuses on the co-creation process in which researchers, adolescents and other stakeholders (such as teachers, parents) actively collaborate on designing the intervention, whereas another ERSR (ESR8) focuses on the implementation and evaluation of the co-created intervention

The project of this ESR (ESR8) is part of work package (WP) 3 and aims to develop, implement and evaluate a school-based intervention to promote healthy behaviour in adolescents using a co-creation approach. The co-creation requires that the adolescents and other stakeholders are maximally involved in all phases of the research, including the development, implementation and evaluation. Two ESRs will closely work together to bring this project to a good end: this ESR specifically focuses on the implementation and evaluation of the intervention, whereas another ESR (ESR7) focuses on the development of the intervention. This ESR will need to select and apply the most optimal methodology for the implementation and evaluation (e.g. design, instruments, tools).

The student will participate in a research project funded by the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) and study the interplay between thermal and nutritional urban selection pressures in the garden spider. This will be achieved by a further development of an ongoing citizen-science project (www.spiderspotter.com), combined with an extended survey of prey availability and nutritional quality in a research platform in Flanders and the quantification of body colouration across urban gradients in Europe. Targeted translocation experiments will subsequently allow understanding of the adaptive value of these phenotypic changes, as well as the potential for genetic evolution.

The AIRO group (Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, airo.ugent.be) of IDLab-imec (idlab.technology ) at Ghent University are offering a PhD studentship to help with our research on social robotics and machine learning. Social robots are robots which interact with people in a natural manner by, for example, using speech, gestures, facial expressions and language. As social robots use natural communication, they are easier to interact with and this has many applications in entertainment, services, education, collaborative robotics and therapy.

we are looking for a full-time PhD student as part of an ERC-funded project (Outside-In: How Bullying in Adolescence Gets Into The Mind and Under the Skin; ERC-2019-STG- 853517). The overall aim of this project is to examine the emotional and biological mechanisms linking bullying victimization to health outcomes in adolescence. Being bullied is a major stressor for many adolescents and it is recognized as a public health concern worldwide. Adolescents who are exposed to bullying are at increased risk for mental and physical health problems, which could even perpetuate into adulthood. Unfortunately, current understanding of how bullying can pose such deleterious effects remain poor, thus limiting our ability to inform prevention and intervention efforts.

The recovery of renewable energy or production of bio-chemicals from waste streams is a key aspect in the bio-based circular economy. Large volumes of wastewater are generated by bio-refineries, which require adequate valorisation. Anaerobic microbial technologies that rely on the ability of micro-organisms to grow in spherical granules have been used for decades to treat such waste streams, yet, the main mechanisms that underline anaerobic granulation remain unclear. The aim of this research project is to unravel the key physical, chemical and/or microbiological factors that determine granulation to better steer anaerobic granular processes. The knowledge generated here will allow to move beyond the current limits of anaerobic technologies towards novel applications for integrated resource recovery.

The PhD research will encompass a very broad exploration of (basic and nonbasic) topologies in the networking layer. This includes varying design parameters as well as comparing a range of multi-stage switching architectures. The PhD research will also examine the design of network control algorithms which establish connections and broadcasting trees, considering the underlying optical network and the bandwidth and timing requirements defined by the applications. These algorithms will allocate resources, aiming to allow maximum usage of power saving techniques, such as managing sleep mode for various components of the optical network. In order to face the different research challenges in this domain, we are looking for a researcher with strong modelling and algorithmic skills needed to advance this field.

About Ghent University

Ghent University is a public research university located in Ghent, Belgium. It was established in 1817 by King William I of the Netherlands. After the Belgian revolution of 1830, the newly formed Belgian state began to administer the university. In 1930, the university became the first Dutch-speaking university in Belgium, whereas French had previously been the standard academic language in what was Université de Gand. In 1991, it was granted major autonomy and changed its name accordingly from State University of Ghent to its current designation.

In contrast to the Catholic University of Leuven or the Free University of Brussels, UGent considers itself a pluralist university in a special sense, i.e. not connected to any particular religion or political ideology. Its motto Inter Utrumque (‘In Between Both Extremes’), on the coat of arms, suggests the acquisition of wisdom and science comes only in an atmosphere of peace, when the institution is fully supported by the monarchy and fatherland.

Ghent University is one of the biggest Flemish universities, consisting of 44,000 students and 9,000 staff members. The University also supports the University Library and the University Hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals in Belgium. It is one of the greatest beneficiaries of funding from the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO). Ghent University consistently rates among the top 100 universities in the world
