PhD position summary/title: “My better self: the use of virtual reality exposure in socially anxious adolescents” a Joint Doctorate Program 

This PhD project is joint doctorate program between the KU Leuven and Utrecht University. The overall goal of the project is to investigate the use of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) in socially anxious adolescents and underlying mechanisms of VRET. First, the efficacy of VRET in socially anxious adolescents will be investigated in an randomized controlled trial. Additionally, three candidate mechanisms will be examined in a series of controlled studies. Various studies are planned, of which some will be conducted at the KU Leuven (partner institution).

The research will focus on human-centred AI to (1) support existing NS customers in making the next-best actions and (2) regain customers by giving them tailored travel inspiration. The two PhD-students will research the following topics:

  • Personalized communication: Transparent, adaptive, interactive customer-AI communication, which allows customers to take control of and, consequently, influence their experience positively. AI-induced communication of when what, and how to provide information is central.
  • Context modelling: External influences can significantly influence the travel experience and preferences (e.g., concerts and soccer games, weather, and luggage). AI-induced, personalized context models steer when, what, and how these influences are taken into account.

The aim of the overarching LEMONTREE project is to develop a next-generation model of the terrestrial biosphere and its interactions with the carbon and nutrient cycles, water cycle and climate, based on firm theoretical and empirical foundations. The two PhD positions at Utrecht University will contribute to the LEMONTREE project by focusing on empirical research on quantifying the effects of temperature, CO2, nutrients and soil microbes on plant growth, leaf gas exchange, and the time scale of acclimation by photosynthesis traits.
