(09) Postdoctoral Position:

Summary of postdoc position: A postdoctoral trainee position is available in the Vaughan lab at the Feinberg Cardiovascular and Renal Research Institute of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine to work on the role of plasminogen activation system in cardio-metabolic disorders. Recent investigative focus of the laboratory has been to explore how the plasminogen activator inhibitor type-1 (PAI-1) affects pathogenesis of risk factors that cause metabolic syndrome including lipid homeostasis, obesity, and diabetes related complications. Projects conducted in the lab integrate multidisciplinary approaches employing molecular, cellular and physiological methods to characterize mouse models of disease and a human kindred carrying a loss of function mutation in the SERPINE1 gene coding for PAI-1.

Summary of postdoc position: National Institutes of Health-funded postdoctoral training opportunity is available to study the pathology of skin diseases, including eczema and psoriasis. Specific topics include 1) the neural basis of itch and pain sensation; 2) wound healing and resolution of inflammation; and 3) the role of non-canonical mast cell activation. Most work is performed in mouse models, though studies of primary human tissue are integrated into each project. A wide variety of techniques are used, including sophisticated gene manipulation, behavioral studies, RNA-seq, flow cytometry, and tissue imaging. The ultimate goal is to identify new therapeutic targets for the more intractable symptoms of skin diseases.

(11) Postdoctoral Position:

Summary of postdoc position: The lab is a basic research lab focused on elucidating the mechanisms of neurodegeneration. Their emphasis is on understanding how amyloid aggregates form in the brain and their downstream toxic functions, such as disrupting protein clearance and lysosomal function. The applicant will be exposed to and learn a variety of techniques ranging from biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology, for the characterization of patient-derived neurons generated from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and mouse models. Their research is concentrated on mechanisms that govern a-synuclein aggregation and how the amyloid forming process results in neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other age-related neurodegenerative disorders.

About the University:

On May 31, 1850, nine men gathered to begin planning a university that would serve the Northwest Territory. Given that they had little money, no land and limited higher education experience, their vision was ambitious. But through a combination of creative financing, shrewd politicking, religious inspiration and an abundance of hard work, the founders of Northwestern University were able to make that dream a reality. In 1853, the founders purchased a 379-acre tract of land on the shore of Lake Michigan 12 miles north of Chicago. They established a campus and developed the land near it, naming the surrounding town Evanston in honor of one of the University’s founders, John Evans. After completing its first building in 1855, Northwestern began classes that fall with two faculty members and 10 students. Twenty-one presidents have presided over Northwestern in the years since. The University has grown to include 12 schools and colleges, with additional campuses in Chicago and Doha, Qatar.

Northwestern is a comprehensive research university that is deeply interdisciplinary across multiple schools and units. Our rigorous yet empathetic academic environment provides a robust mixture of theory and practice, with an emphasis on top-tier research, new knowledge, creative expression and practical application. If you are at Northwestern, you are part of an innovative, collaborative, and multidimensional community delivering an impact that is rare in higher education.
